TWO teenage stepsons of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan were arrested at 9.30pm last night, in another twist to his bizarre death.
Petaling Jaya district police sources told The Malaysian Insight the duo were picked up after Nazrin’s neck was found with injuries believed to be from an arrow. His death has been classified as murder.
It is understood the two boys practice archery.
Their mother was arrested two days ago with her ex-husband. Police obtained a seven-day remand order for them in connection with the murder last June 14, a day before Hari Raya.
The police source confirmed that the woman – Samirah Muzaffar – is the daughter of renowned political scientist and civil rights activist Chandra Muzaffar.
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat had told the Malaysian Insight that the 43-year-old man was detained in Sepang, Selangor, followed by the arrest of the woman in Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur an hour later.
“The man we arrested was the ex-husband of the woman we detained. She is also the widow of the deceased (Nazrin Hassan),” Fadzil said.
Nazrin was found dead after his bedroom at a double-storey terrace house in Mutiara Damansara caught fire on Hari Raya eve.
Nazrin’s family had said then his handphone had exploded, causing the fire. Cradle Fund also issued a statement saying its CEO died from blast injuries attributed to an exploding handphone that was being charged next to him.
Last month, however, Selangor police classified the case as murder after investigators found traces of petrol in Nazrin’s room.
“We were alerted by the Fire and Rescue Department after lab results showed traces of petrol on the head (of the victim), bedframe and mattress, as well as on his handphone,” Fadzil had said.
Nazrin obtained a Bachelor of Law (LL.B Hons) from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom in 1994. He was also an executive committee member of the United Kingdom Executive Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC).
His 43-year-old widow is a senior executive at the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation. – September 6, 2018.
