POLICE today arrested the widow of former Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan as part of their investigations into his murder.

Also arrested was her ex-husband.

Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat told the Malaysian Insight that a 43-year-old man was detained in Sepang, Selangor, early this morning followed by the arrest of the woman in Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur an hour later.

Police said the suspects were formerly married.

“The man we arrested was the ex-husband of the woman we detained. She is also the widow of the deceased (Nazrin Hassan),” Fadzil told The Malaysian Insight.

“The man was picked up at 1am while the woman was detained an hour later. We have obtained a seven-day remand order from the Petaling Jaya magistrates’ court.”

Nazrin was found dead after his bedroom at a double-storey terrace house in Mutiara Damansara caught fire on June 14, on the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Nazrin’s family had said then that his handphone exploded, causing the fire while his company Cradle Fund had issued a statement saying their CEO died from blast injuries attributed to an exploding handphone that was being charged next to him.

Last month, however, Selangor police classified the case as murder after investigators found traces of petrol in Nazrin’s room.

“We were alerted by the Fire and Rescue Department after lab results showed traces of petrol on his head, bedframe and mattress, as well as on his handphone,” Fadzil had said.

Nazrin obtained a Bachelor of Law (LL.B Hons) from the University of Buckingham, in the United Kingdom, in 1994. He was also an executive committee member of the United Kingdom Executive Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC).

His 43-year-old widow is a senior executive at the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO). – September 4, 2018.
