RAFIZI Ramli has confirmed that he will contest the PKR deputy president’s post, setting the stage for a showdown with long-time rival Mohamed Azmin Ali.
The party vice-president said he will make a formal announcement on Sunday.
“I am going to contest the deputy president’s post… I’m not interested in any government positions, but I still owe it to PKR members not to just walk away (from the party),” he told Malaysiakini.
Azmin earlier this week said he had yet to decide on the post he would contest in the party polls, fuelling speculation that he was gunning for the presidency.
The PKR deputy president said he would make a decision later, as his focus was on the current Parliament session, which ends on August 16.
“At some point, I will make a decision. Right now, I want to focus on the Parliament session.
“(As a minister,) I have an obligation to answer all the questions posed to us.”
On Sunday, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim announced that he would contest the presidency, saying the decision was reached after discussions with his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is the current president, Azmin and other party leaders.
Nominations for the party elections are scheduled for August 5. – July 26, 2018.
