AMID party talk of a Rafizi Ramli-Azmin Ali clash for the PKR deputy presidency in the upcoming party polls, the incumbent No. 2 remained tight-lipped over which seat he would contest.

Azmin, who is also expected to challenge Anwar Ibrahim for the presidency, said he was still busy with ministerial tasks in his new Economic Affairs portfolio.

“I haven’t made any decision because I’m too busy with my new tasks,” the Gombak MP and minister said at the Parliament lobby today when asked if he had decided to go for the president’s post.

Party polls are scheduled for September.

If Azmin gives way to Anwar, talk is that he will face a challenge from PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli for the No. 2 spot. Rafizi has the backing of about 30 PKR elected representatives and grassroots leaders.

Those interviewed by The Malaysian Insight said they felt the former Pandan MP better represented PKR’s “spirit of reform” and believed he had what it takes to lead the party because of his contribution to Pakatan Harapan’s win in the 14th general election.

Rafizi, however, has not revealed whether he would defend his current post or challenge incumbent Azmin for the deputy position. – July 23, 2018.
