TWO Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) representatives surprised everyone when they turned up at the nomination hall for the Sungai Kandis by-election but left 10 minutes later without filing any nomination papers.
After greeting the two candidates – PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and BN’s Lokman Adam – the two PRM reps approached the Election Commission table and sat down.
But less than 10 minutes later, the two left the hall, without filing any nomination papers.
One of them identified as Ahmad Kamaruddin explained that they came “just in case BN didn’t turn up”.
Since BN and PH have already filed their papers, PRM decided it will let the straight fight between the two parties continue.
“But we don’t rule out contesting in the Balakong by-election,” said Ahmad before leaving the nomination centre.
The Balakong seat was left vacant following the death of its DAP assemblyman Ng Tien Chee who was killed in an accident in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur early yesterday.
A by-election is expected to called for the state seat within the next 60 days.
The Sungai Kandis by-election will see a three-cornered fight between BN’s Lokman Adam, PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and independent Murthy Krishnasamy.
The candidates were announced by returning officer Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad, who is also the Shah Alam mayor.
This is the first by-election following the general election on May 9.
In the May 9 election, PKR’s Shuhaimie Shafiei polled 23,998 votes to win with a majority of 12,480 votes. BN’s Kamaruzzaman received 11,518 votes while PAS Mohd Yusof Abdullah had 7,573 votes. PSM’s Hanafiah Husin mustered only 76 votes out of the 50,800.
The seat fell vacant upon Shuhaimie’s death on July 2. – July 21, 2018.
