TWO candidates for the Sungai Kandis state by-election turned up at 9am sharp today to fill in their nomination papers at the MBSA hall in Shah Alam. An independent candidate showed up at 9.30am to do the same.

After a boisterous start to the day, Barisan Nasional candidate Lokman Adam was accompanied by newly elected Umno deputy president Mohamed Hassan into the hall while PKR candidate Zawawi Ahmad Mughni entered with party leaders in tow.

Lokman arrived together with former ministers Annuar Musa, Abdul Rahman Dahlan and Mahadzir Khalid while Zawawi’s entourage included Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali, Agriculture Minister Salahuddin Ayob, Selangor Menteri Besar Amiruddin Shaari and exco Ng Sze Han.

Both candidates had hundreds of supporters who turned up at the nomination centre.

So far no untoward incidents have been recorded although the two sets of supporters found themselves too close for comfort.

The PKR side was barricaded just in front of the nomination centre while the BN side escorted their candidate right up to the nomination centre gates.

The Light Strike Force was on hand to stop BN supporters from pushing forward as election rules do not permit supporters to come to within 50 metres of the nomination centre.

The nomination period is from 9am to 10am. The returning officer is Shah Alam Mayor Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad.
