POLICE have completed the reopened probe into Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu’s murder, said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
He told reporters today that police have submitted the investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
“We have completed the investigation, and we have also recorded statements from key witnesses, including Altantuya’s father, Dr Setev Shaariibuu.
“The investigation papers have been submitted, and we are now awaiting instructions on how to proceed.”
It was reported last month that lawyer Ramkarpal Singh, representing the Shaariibuu family, had urged police and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to reopen the probe.
Setev was in Malaysia in May to meet with Dr Mahathir to discuss the matter. He lodged a police report in efforts to reopen the case.
In 2006, Altantuya was shot dead in a forest reserve in Shah Alam before her body was blown up using military-grade explosives.
Three years later, two Special Action Unit officers were found guilty of killing the 28-year-old, and sentenced to death.
Both were acquitted in 2013 by the Court of Appeal. However, following an appeal by the prosecution, their sentences were upheld by the Federal Court.
One of the officers, Sirul Azhar Umar, fled the country. He is currently being held at the Villawood immigration detention facility in Australia.
He recently expressed willingness to cooperate with police in the case, on the condition that his death sentence be commuted.
The other officer, Azilah Hadri, is behind bars at Kajang Prison. – July 19, 2018.
