MALAYSIA will reopen investigations into the 12-year-old murder case of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, following the report lodged by her father in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, said Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

The inspector-general of police told The Malaysian Insight that the case will be reinvestigated for murder, the same provision as the earlier case that saw two police commandos in Najib Razak’s personal security detail charged and sentenced to death.

Fuzi, however, did not give a time frame for how long the fresh investigations would take, or detail the other areas police would be looking at.

“We will forward the investigation paper to the Attorney-General’s Chambers once it’s completed.”

Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Zainuddin Yaacob said police have recorded a statement from Altantuya’s father, Dr Setev Shaariibuu, to facilitate investigations.

It is understood that although the report was lodged at the Dang Wangi police headquarters, the case has been referred to the Brickfields police headquarters, which had investigated the murder previously.

Setev, in his report yesterday, named Musa Safri, the former aide-de-camp to then defence minister Najib, as the key witness.

Setev’s lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, had said Musa was a crucial witness in the case, and questioned why the prosecution did not call him during the trial.

“It was a glaring omission to the very important issue of motive.”

According to reports, Musa, who was Najib’s personal assistant, had allegedly ordered the two police officers – Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri – to fetch Altantuya on the night she was murdered in October 2006.

Musa, however, was never questioned by police, nor was he called up to testify in court during the murder trial.

It was also learnt that Musa has retired from the police force.

In his report, Setev said Azilah and Sirul had no motive to kill Altantuya, as both men had never met her before.

“They did not know my daughter, and as such, they could not have had any motive to murder her.” – June 21, 2018.
