PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad believes there are strong grounds to reopen the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case, but said all efforts to do so must follow the rule of law, said the Shaariibuu family lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh.

Ramkarpal said Dr Mahathir directed for all credible evidence to be presented to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.

“We have briefed (Dr Mahathir) on the case, and he agreed that this is a good case that should be reopened and that it follows the rule of law.

“What is certain (is) that there are people involved who warrant the urgent opening of the investigations to put the matter to rest,” he said, after accompanying Altantuya’s father, Setev Shaariibuu, to meet Dr Mahathir at his office in Putrajaya earlier today.

Setev had earlier lodged a report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters calling for the authorities to delve deeper into the role played by Senior Assistant Commissioner Musa Safri in the Altantuya murder case.

Setev had also met Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to urge him to reopen investigations.

Ramkarpal said they know who was involved.

“The person that gave the order is the one that is most responsible (for the murder) and that is my view that that person or those others who are involved should be brought to justice.”

Ramkarpal said if the person who has been exposed for the murder of Altantuya could be charged with murder.

“It all depends on the extent of the investigations.

“If there evidence to show that somebody ordered the killing, then that person is more culpable than the person who carried out the murder.

“I hope investigations will reveal who that person is.”

Setev said he was pleased with the meeting with Dr Mahathir.

“I’m very satisfied with the meeting. It’s was like a meeting between two fathers.

“In any case, my daughter was murdered and there must be justice.”

Altantuya, 28, was shot dead before the body was blown up in a jungle in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.

Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri – who were once former prime minister Najib Razak’s bodyguards – were found guilty of her murder and sentenced to death in 2015.

Sirul, who fled Malaysia in 2013, is currently in Australian custody. Azilah is in Kajang prison. – June 20, 2018.
