THE police must delve deeper into the role played by Senior Assistant Commissioner Musa Safri in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case, said lawyer Ramkarpal Singh.
“
In the Altantuya murder trial, Musa, the former aide to then prime minister Najib Razak, was not on the witness list despite allegedly being the go-between for Abdul Razak Baginda and the former policemen who murdered her. It is believed that the two policemen – Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri – took instructions from Musa.
“The police must take into account why the prosecution did not call him (to testify) in the past. This was a glaring omission on its part,” he said outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters, where he accompanied Altantuyaa’s father, Dr Setev Shaariibuu, in lodging a police report to reopen the case.
He said that Musa was mentioned in the report and statement given by Setev.
In the police report, Setev said that during the trial, the prosecution had evidence that it was Musa who ensured that Azilah and Sirul Azhar were at Abdul Razak’s house on the night Altantuya was murdered.
Setev said in his report, he suggested that there could have been other parties instructing Azilah and Sirul Azhar to murder his daughter.
“I believe they (other parties) are guilty.
Setev said that if not for Musa, Azilah and Sirul Azhar would not have been at Abdul Razak’s house that fateful night, and that his daughter would likely be alive today.
“Musa is a crucial witness as he would have been able to provide information as to who instructed him to secure Azilah and Sirul Azhar’s presence at the house that night and for what purpose.”
Ramkarpal said Musa’s testimony would have had a major impact had he been called to testify in the murder trial.
“The motive and evidence should have been presented from the beginning
“If other people are responsible for the murder, they must also be brought to justice, regardless of when the crime was committed.”
Altantuya, 28, was shot dead before her body was blown up in a forest in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.
It is believed that her body was blown up using military-grade C4 explosives.
Sirul Azhar and Azilah – who were once Najib’s bodyguards – were found guilty of her murder and sentenced to death in 2015.
It was reported that the Federal Court had held that Musa’s testimony could not have helped in the defence of Azilah and Sirul Azhar.
In an 88-page judgement, Justice Suriyadi Halim Omar had said: “It (Musa’s testimony) is only useful to Abdul Razak (Baginda). It merely confirmed evidence adduced from Altantuya’s cousin and friend that he had a relationship with the deceased.”
Sirul, who fled Malaysia in 2013, is currently in Australian custody. Azilah is in Kajang prison. – June 20, 2018.
