I fear no one, not even Dr Mahathir, says Apandi

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Mohamed Apandi Ali today brushed off Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s warning yesterday that he will have to answer for concealing evidence in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) investigations, saying he does not fear anyone because he has nothing to hide.

“I do not fear anyone, not even Mahathir. I do not fear man but I do fear Allah,” the A-G said in a text message to The Malaysian Insight.

“Whatever I do as the AG is based on the available facts as contained in the investigation papers. There is nothing to hide.”

At a Pakatan Harapan ceramah in Shah Alam last night, Dr Mahathir told a crowd of about 2,000 that Apandi could be held culpable for hiding evidence in connection with 1MDB.

“The A-G’s Chambers may have committed a serious offence. You will know this one day when we win,” Dr Mahathir told the audience.

The PH chairman had also said that when the opposition coalition wins, it would call the AG and ask him if he had hidden proof of a crime.

Apandi last year cleared Prime Minister Najib Razak of any wrongdoing in the 1MDB scandal.

He had also dismissed the United States Department of Justice’s (DoJ) civil suit last month, which brought the total amount of money allegedly stolen from 1MDB to US$4.5 billion (RM19.3 billion), as a repeat of its previous suit, which lacked proof.

The DoJ aims to seize US$1.7 billion in assets including a US$165 million yacht owned by financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low.

In July last year, the DoJ had filed a civil lawsuit seeking the forfeiture and recovery of more than US$1 billion in assets linked to what it described as an “international conspiracy to launder funds misappropriated” from 1MDB, the largest case ever brought by its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.

The US lawsuits implicated several Malaysians, including “Malaysia Official No. 1” (MO1), who Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan later identified as Prime Minister Najib Razak. – July 18, 2017.
