THE Education Ministry will carry out a holistic study before making a decision on whether to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), said minister Maszlee Malik.

He said the ministry would also take into account the views of all quarters as well as the interests of Bahasa Melayu as the national language, and the impact of the recognition.

Maszlee said although there had been calls for the UEC to be recognised as one of the public universities’ entry requirements, the ministry would not be hasty in making any decision.

“(Although) UEC (recognition) is among the promises made in Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto, we need to take into account the views of various parties and (the interests) of Bahasa Melayu and national harmony.

“I will meet with various stakeholders including those who champion the national language,” he told reporters after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan Seberang Marang today.

The UEC is issued to graduates of Chinese independent high schools.

Meanwhile, commenting on the case involving a teacher who allegedly molested his students, Maszlee said the ministry viewed the matter seriously and would not compromise with any staff involved in misconduct.

He also urged teachers, parents as well as students to come forward and lodge reports on the incident.

Yesterday, social activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi through his Facebook account revealed the teacher’s alleged acts, which he claimed have been known since April. – Bernama, July 8, 2018.

  • If recognition of d UEC qualification is already in your PH's GE 14 manifesto, then do not back-track now and contradict your Deputy Minister's earlier statement today. After all, some of d PH-governed states like Penang, Selangor & Malacca have already recognised it and so, d PH leadership must be consistent in all their new policies for d rakyat's benefit.

  • Aiyah, pakai otak sikit. In the first place UEC shd be consider purely on its academic merits alone, n no other. Period. Because we are Malaysians, you can add that they must at least pass BM. That's all. So, what's your problem? Hope you don't be like BN giving in to the racist n religious bigots

  • Dont tell me PH component parties did not study the facts of recognizing UEC before incorporating into PHS GE 14 manifesto. Tan Sri Muhyiddin was DPM/Education Minister before he was removed. Sure he knows very well all the reasons why UMNO did not want to recognize UEC. Is he still not supporting UEC, and you are also come from the same party like him which has UMNO DNA. Please dont disappoint 95% of Malaysian Chinese who supported PH during the GE.
