BARISAN Nasional component parties MCA, MIC, SUPP and LDP are believed to have received money from 1Malaysia Development Bhd, said a business weekly report.
Quoting sources, The Edge said the sum given to the parties for the 2013 election amounted to some RM300 million and that the Umno head office was the biggest beneficiary at RM145 million.
The money was transferred from one of then prime minister and party president Najib Razak’s personal accounts with AmBank, said the report.
It said the RM145 million was part of RM800 million in the account.
Investigators believe the money originated from 1MDB’s bond issue in 2012 and 2013.
In 2013, the Wall Street Journal reported that some RM2.6 billion was transferred to Najib’s accounts in March that same year.
Najib, however, had denied any wrongdoing and said the money was a donation from the Saudi royal family.
The sources also told The Edge that other Umno beneficiaries included Selangor Umno (RM19 million) and Johor Umno (RM25 million).
MCA was alleged to have received RM11 million while MIC was given RM15 million.
The report said that close to 70 individuals, 60 companies and 10 foundations also received some RM500 million from Najib’s account between 2011 and 2014.
The sources said that the individuals will be questioned and asked to return the money, even if they were not aware that the money had come from an illicit source.
Yesterday, acting Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno’s main account had been frozen by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Similarly, MACC’s 1MDB task force said it had ordered a freeze on some 900 other accounts, including political parties besides Umno. – June 30, 2018.
