MORE Umno members believe Najib Razak caused them to lose the government rather than the goods and services tax (GST) issue, according to a Merdeka Centre survey.
Two out of five Umno members polled blamed Najib but only one out of five said it was the GST. Only 8% believed that Dr Mahathir Mohamad was a factor for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) historic defeat.
The survey by Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research showed about 40% of Umno delegates and members polled believed that Najib was to blame for BN’s shocking defeat last month.
Also high up on the list of factors cited for BN’s ouster from Putrajaya were the GST issue (22%) and the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal (14%).
The survey also showed 83% said the problem of money politics in the party should be overcome quickly.
Also high up on the list of Umno’s priorities were forging stronger ties with PAS (77%) and restructuring BN to have fairer ties with MCA and MIC (59%).
But the majority (66%) of the respondents were against cooperating with Pakatan Harapan.
Meanwhile, 57% said that Umno should stand alone while the party was split right down the middle on suggestions to open the party to other races.
The survey, which was carried out from June 25-28, showed that more than half of Umno’s delegates and members felt that the party was shaky (40%) or in critical condition (18%).
And more than 83% of the respondents agreed that Umno was facing a crisis.
Ahead of the party’s elections tomorrow, 48% the 691 respondents felt that Umno leaders need to regain voters’ trust in the party while another 45% said that the new leaders needed to have vision to rebuild the 71-year-old party.
A third of the respondents felt that the new leaders would also have to reunite the party while 27% said they needed to regain the trust of Malay voters.
The respondents consisted of 19% delegates, 69% normal members and 8% non-member supporters. – June 29, 2018.
