TRADERS registered under the goods and services tax system must submit their GST-03 statements or tax returns even though GST has been zero-rated, said the Customs Department.

Its Kedah director, Johari Alifiah, said there are companies and traders that have not done so due to confusion over whether the statements should be submitted after the consumption tax was zero-rated on June 1.

“Companies and traders need to submit the GST-03 statement as the tax is still considered effective until the sales and services tax is enforced in September,” he told reporters in Alor Star today.

He said 15,000 traders in the state are registered under the GST system, and 95% have submitted the necessary documents.

Meanwhile, state Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry director Mohamad Fitri Hassan said 18 complaints have been lodged and one notice issued under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 since GST was zero-rated.

“We inspected 789 premises in Kedah, involving 23,670 goods. Eleven of the complaints were on prices that were not changed, and two were on misunderstandings between traders and customers over the new prices.

“The remaining cases involved price increases and confusion over GST-free goods, such as vegetables and fruits.” – Bernama, June 9, 2018.
