COMMUNICATIONS and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he would propose the formation of a media council to the cabinet in two weeks’ time.

He said the structure of the council was being planned and that he was meeting all relevant parties involved.

“We had stated that we wanted to establish a media council. We are in the process of setting up its structure. We have indicated participation from all sectors. We will propose this to the cabinet in two weeks,” Gobind said at a press conference today.

The Puchong MP also said he was looking to moot policies that would take his ministry into the future and revamp several agencies.

“Certain agencies need to be restructured altogether. They need to be demolished and rebuilt.”

Meanwhile, he said he would also meet representatives of all major telco operators soon to discuss reducing the price of Internet services in Malaysia.

He said the government was looking to increase internet speed as well as reduce costs but need to take into consideration its feasibility.

“We have certain plans in mind. We are still working on this. I will meet with telcos next week or following week to discuss the way forward,” he said.

Last week, Gobind said he would improve internet speeds as part of Pakatan Harapan’s pledges before the election.

He said the public had complained about the nation’s internet speed, which was below par compared with neighbouring countries. – May 30, 2018.
