MALAYSIA has accepted Russia’s invitation to participate in the forthcoming Brics summit in Kazan, Russia from October 22-24, 2024, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the invitation, extended by President Vladimir Putin himself during their working dinner, is a clear testament to Malaysia’s significance to Russia.
“This marks a significant step towards our ultimate goal of joining the group,” he said on social media during his two-day visit to Russia to attend the 9th Eastern Economic Forum.
Brics is an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Anwar said Putin and him had expressed their shared commitment to strengthening ties between Malaysia and Russia.
“As Malaysia continues to expand its geo-economic space and diversify its strategic relationships, Russia will be a key partner that shares our vision for growth, prosperity, and development,” he said, Bernama reported.
From Islamic finance to agriculture to education, Anwar said the potential for Malaysia and Russia to leverage their expertise for the mutual benefit of their peoples was immense.
“As we build on the commitments and shared vision discussed during this visit, I am optimistic that the foundations laid today will lead to meaningful cooperation between Russia and Malaysia in the years to come,” he added.
Meanwhile, Putin said trade between Russia and Malaysia was approaching US$3.5 billion (RM15.17 billion) and there were ample opportunities to expand it.
Kremlin.ru reported that Putin also said Russia was expected to find new points of contact with Asean when Malaysia became Asean chairman in 2025.
“We have focused on developing our relations with Asean, and it is well known that Malaysia is playing a leading role in the association.
“Next year, Malaysia will preside at the organisation and I expect that during your chairmanship we will find new points of contact with this growing region of the world,” Kremlin.ru quoted the president as saying yesterday. – September 5, 2024.
