Anwar must focus on domestic front, says Ku Li

PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim must prioritise internal issues, particularly the economy, instead of focusing heavily on foreign diplomacy, Umno stalwart Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said.

Tengku Razaleigh, widely known as Ku Li, acknowledged that Anwar might have good intentions in promoting his foreign diplomacy achievements, but emphasised that it is more crucial now to address the country’s domestic challenges more effectively than when he first took office.

He urged Anwar to direct his energy and attention towards ensuring that the economic recovery is felt by all segments of society, following encouraging data on economic growth and the strengthening of the ringgit.

“But this alone is not enough. More needs to be done to ensure that the growth is sustainable and benefits all stakeholders in the country, particularly the B40 and M20 groups, who continue to struggle with the rising cost of living,” he said in a recent interview.

He said Anwar was perceived to be more focused on international matters..

“He needs to look after his own backyard. We have all kinds of things going on.”

Tengku Razaleigh said that while while efforts to strengthen the ringgit and implement fiscal policies to reduce costs and increase wages are positive, the private sector has been slow to respond.

“We need to explore how the private sector can align with public sector initiatives, from raising productivity to increasing wages, so that parity in purchasing power can be achieved.”

While acknowledging Anwar’s strengths, Tengku Razaleigh said he has advised Anwar to pursue a diverse approach when engaging with foreign investments.

“We cannot ignore China’s phenomenal growth, and we need to engage with them on both diplomatic and economic fronts. I told Anwar this, and I see that he has been making efforts to reach out to China,” Tengku Razaleigh said.

The former finance minister, credited with forming the national oil corporation Petronas and other landmark institutions, reminded that Malaysia is a small country with a middle-tier economy.

He added that while the fiscal policies aimed at becoming an exporting nation are commendable, more must be done to insulate the country from external shocks.

Later, Tengku Razaleigh attended the launch of his autobiography at Kesedar Inn in Gua Musang.

The author, Zinitulniza Abdul Kadir, said the 87-year-old was the prime minister the country never had. She highlighted a chapter in the book that discusses how Tengku Razaleigh was offered the prime ministership by Hussein Onn, but declined as he was busy establishing Petronas.

“And the rest, as they say, is history,” she said..

Anwar has been at the forefront of seeking justice for the Palestinians in the Israel-Gaza war.

It was recently revealed that Anwar had been on 31 visits to 19 countries since November 2022. 

Among the countries he had visited were Saudi Arabia, Australia, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Germany, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Egypt, Laos, China, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Qatar.

Anwar recently returned from a three-day visit to India and is scheduled to visit Russia and Laos soon. – August 24, 2024.
