DR Mahathir Mohamad today distanced himself from claims that he was part of a plot to topple the unity government via the so-called Dubai Move.

He also aimed his guns at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, saying forming a “backdoor government” was his speciality.

“Firstly, I have not been to Dubai in a long time,” said the former prime minister on social media.

“Secondly, as far as I can remember, such political moves or attempts to form a backdoor government are the speciality of the prime minister,” he added.

Dr Mahathir said many would still remember the PKR president’s various attempts to change the government, including once on September 16, 2008 move. Dr Mahathir also spoke of a “Kajang move” to make the then PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail the Selangor menteri besar.

“There were also times when he said ‘I have the numbers and ‘a strong, formidable and convincing majority’. All these were moves to take over the government via the backdoor.

“When he was making these moves, these were not considered acts of treachery or betrayal, or that they would cause instability, damage the economy or be undemocratic,” said Dr Mahathir.

In recent days, rumours of a “Dubai Move” were heard after Community Communications Department Ismail Yusop said on Facebook post that Perikatan Nasional leaders had held a meeting to plot to topple Anwar’s government.

Ismail said that the PN leaders were tasked with identifying the government MPs who could be persuaded to defect.

Government leaders and supporters have slammed PN for the alleged scheme. Some accused Dr Mahathir of playing a role in the plot.

PN leaders have denied the existence of such a scheme but at the same time said changing the government was part of a democratic process.

  • Can act through proxies and representatives and you are not lacking of these. Of course you are not going to be personally there as you are the type of person who throw stones and hide the hands. You are the most evil, surreptitious and scheming person who ever walked the face of the earth
