COMMUNITY pharmacies have adequate supplies of medical essentials and are equipped to face the recent surge in Covid-19 cases nationwide, Malaysian Pharmacists Society president Amrahi Buang said.

“There is no reason to worry. I have yet to receive any feedback from pharmacies. They are well-stocked.

“So far, there is no news from pharmacies saying they have run out of stock for self-test kits and medication,” Amrahi told The Malaysian Insight.

The Health Ministry (MOH) has been reporting a hike in weekly Covid-19 infections.

In the November 19 to 25 week, Covid cases rose by 57.3% to 3,626, compared to 2,305 cases recorded in the previous week.

Director-general of Health Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said 48% of the cases involved those between ages of 20 and 40, with more than 98% experiencing only mild symptoms.

Although infections have been detected nationwide, the bulk of new cases are mostly centred in the Klang Valley.

Amrahi said pharmacies will keep themselves well-prepared according to data provided by the Health Ministry.

“What we have to pay more attention to is those places with the most number of cases, which is the Klang Valley region. It is important for us (to stock up in this region).

“Pharmacies can know the number cases through the MySejahtera app and make their own judgment on whether to replenish stock,” he said.

No reason to panic buy

Amrahi said that although cases are showing an upward trend, there is no need for panic-buying.

He said it is reasonable for the public to stock up on test kits and medication at home but urged them not to hoard.

“I don’t recommend panic-buying,” he said.

“So far, most of the cases are treatable and within the community. Hence, people can buy a few, like one or two to keep at home.

“If they feel they have Covid symptoms, they should get themselves tested (with a self-test kit) and update their status in MySejahtera.

“This would help the ministry keep track of the actual number of infections,” he added.

Amrahi said people should use the experience gained from the pandemic as a guide to get through the recent spike in infections.

“The population has had enough experience during the pandemic. They are more alert and well-prepared now.

“They know what to do. Meaning they have to look at the symptoms, then they have to do the test, and have an oximeter, and later treat the symptoms, if any.

“If they test positive, they should follow MOH’s guidelines on isolation and quarantine,” he added. – December 6, 2023.
