POLICE have summoned several people linked to yesterday’s “Save Malaysia” rally in Kuala Lumpur to have their statement recorded.

Newly elected Taman Medan assemblyman Afif Bahardin took to X to confirm the matter.

“Dang Wangi police contacted me and I was told to be present at the district police station tomorrow (Monday) at 12pm.

“I will cooperate and I am ready to assist the cops in this matter,” said the former PKR man.

In a brief text message, ex-Umno member Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said some 20 people were called up by cops to have their statements recorded tomorrow at the Dang Wangi police station.

The rally held yesterday was to protest the attorney-general’s decision to withdraw 47 corruption charges against Zahid.

The Malaysian Insight has contacted Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya for comment.

Police said yesterday they were planning to take action against protesters.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Allaudeen Abdul Majid said the rally was not in compliance with the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.

“The gathering was not within the confines of the PAA.

“We will see what follow-up actions should be taken after this,” Allaudeen told reporters at a press conference in Dang Wangi.

Allaudeen said despite rally organisers having submitted a notice to police about the gathering, it did not adhere to guidelines outlined in the PAA.

Last week, High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed the prosecution’s application to grant Zahid a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) on criminal breach of trust, corruption, and money laundering charges related to Yayasan Akalbudi funds.

The prosecution said it wanted to halt proceedings so a more in-depth investigation could be done.

On Saturday, calls for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to step down and shouts of “Reformati” (reform is dead) reverberated at the rally organised by Perikatan Nasional in the capital.

The rally in front of the Sogo shopping complex lasted about an hour before the crowd dispersed.

Among those seen in the protest were Bersatu’s Badrul Hisham Shaharin and former Putrajaya Umno deputy chief Tun Faisal.

The group that gathered at Masjid Jamek in Kampung Baru marched to the Dang Wangi police station before heading to the Sogo shopping centre on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

As the crowd marched, chants of “Tolak Zahid!”, “Dakwa Zahid!”, and “Reformati!” rang out.

Police on site kept close watch on the demonstrators. – September 17, 2023.
