Death of go-karting father and daughter an accident, rules court

THE coroner’s court in Kuantan today ruled that the death of a father and daughter at the Educational Innovation in Motorsport and Automotive Race (EIMARace) 2016 in Jalan Skupa, Indera Mahkota, was an unavoidable incident.

Coroner Dazuki Ali said the organiser of the race, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), had planned the race adequately despite the change of location and race route at the new circuit at Jalan Sukpa, Indera Mahkota.

“The involved parties complied with the standards set for organising the race and took the necessary measures in terms of safety, including the safety of the riders.

“This can be seen from the inspections conducted from time to time. When inadequate measures were found, steps to improve the security were then taken,” he said, reading his brief judgment.

Dazuki also decided that the death of Izwan Isa, 39, at 12.20pm on September 25, 2016, and his youngest child, Nur Zulaikha, five, at 2.20pm on the same day at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital was the result of a road accident.

The inquest proceeding was previously informed that the accident had caused the victim’s wife, Siti Suhaiza Seman, 38, and their eldest son Muhammad Izz Daniel, seven, to sustain injuries.

Dazuki added that Izwan, a factory supervisor, suffered severe injuries in the chest, including broken ribs, resulting in severe bruising and tearing in the lungs.

Nur Zulaikha suffered severe head injuries and brain swelling that blocked blood flow, resulting in death.

“On how they were killed, I found they were both hit by a go-kart machine that crashed the right side of the circuit before breaking the water barrier, after trying to avoid colliding with other go-karts,” he said, after reviewing the testimony of 20 witnesses since the inquest started on December 11 last year. – Bernama, March 29, 2018.
