DR Mahathir Mohamad and wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali joined hundreds of demonstrators at a rally this morning to protest against the re-delineation motion to be tabled in Parliament that opposition leaders say will give the ruling Barisan Nasional an advantage in the next general election.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman was joined by other opposition leaders under the watchful eyes of the police, who had earlier told rally organisers that they are not allowed to march to Parliament.

Dr Mahathir told the crowd they have gathered here because they have lost hope in Malaysia’s democracy.

“This country is now a kleptocracy country. They will oppress the people in whatever way possible. Don’t be scared if you are threatened,” he said.

Today’s rally, organised by electoral reform group Bersih 2.0, aims to hand over a memorandum of protest to Prime Minister Najib Razak and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia. Najib is due to table the bill at 11.30am today.

Civil society leaders and opposition politicians said the Election Commission’s re-delineation proposal for Selangor, which is controlled by the PH pact, violates the federal constitution and leads to gerrymandering and malapportionment in the number of voters in constituencies.

Rally goers said Najib will table the re-delineation report in Parliament today to “steal the 14th general election”, adding that the gerrymandering was too obvious.

Among the opposition leaders in the crowd are Muhyiddin Yassin, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Lim Kit Siang, Mohammad Sabu and Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Dr Mahathir said Prime Minister Najib Razak has bought out all the law enforcement in the country and also introduced the anti-fake news act to silence critics

“He can buy out the cops, the army, the A-G and the MACC. I am confident those who are forced to follow Najib will also reject him when the election comes. The money received from Najib is haram. It cannot be halal.

“This is the way they silence the critics of Najib. Anything that is done by him cannot be questioned. The donation in his account, that is fake news,” he said, referring to the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib’s account.

The prime minister claims the money is donation from Saudi Arabian royals. – March 28, 2018.

  • Wah. So the BN government are going to steal GE 14 with their electorate redelineation. Are they?. So you senile old goat, what proportion of the vote do you think your Fabulous hoax of a coalition will win. It certainly won’t be the 52% achieved at GE 13. What with the incompetent non democratic governance by Penang and Selangor, YOUR own involvement, the betrayal of the Chinese by the DAP and the betrayal by the near defunct PKR of Anwar I would reckon you would be lucky (very lucky) to gain the 30% of the votes that the Chinese hold. Oh, did I mention the racism and anti Islam stance of the Chinese, the pathetically weak Harapan manifesto..and YOU (again). Let’s revise that figure down to 20-25%. Boundary issues have suddenly become TOTALLY IRRELEVANT. But they do make a wonderful excuse for your pathetic coalition to AVOID doing what needs to be done. And the perfect whipping boy for you to blame when you lose ...AGAIN. BTW, which electorate are you going to stand in you weak conniving senile old goat?

  • PS. Have Armanah said anything lately about their goal of an Islamic State? Or have they like Harapan Youth been told to shut up and do what Mahathir tells them

  • When Dr.M became part of the Bersih protest the police kept their distance after threatening arrest for non-compliance of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. Such is the stature and power of this man that I wonder when he makes it to Parliament eventually he might have MPs "practically eating out of his hand"! Parliament may never be the same again..

  • Considering that the redelination exercise is one of the main thrust of the ruling government in securing victory in the coming election, that 800 people is the all the opposition could muster to protest it, makes you question just how strong is the opposition's desire to win ? 800 won't even make an appearance in people's heart and mind, what more an impression.
