Voters urged to check polling info a week before GE14 to avoid problems

THE Election Commission today advised voters to check their polling details at least one week before polling day to avoid running into problems, including going to the wrong polling station.

EC strategic management programme head Khadijah Ishak said anticipated problems included a change of designated polling station for those who had changed their home address.

She said if the redelineation of electoral boundaries was passed and applied in GE14, there could be changes in the polling stations for some voters.

“For instance, a person who voted at School A previously may have to vote at School B or School C if the new electoral boundaries are applied. So, he or she cannot expect to vote in School A this time.

“That is why a check must be done and it is the responsibility of the voter to make it easy for himself on polling day,” she told Bernama after making a guest appearance on Nine11 on the Bernama News Channel today.

Khadijah said the EC had checklists at the polling stations but voters could only check their polling streams, not the electoral rolls.

She said checks were possible via any state election office, the My SPR Semak mobile app, phone at 03-8892 7018,  the EC portal, and  SMS by typing SPR followed by identity card number in a text message and sending it to 15888.

Khadijah said a campaign to check the electoral rolls would be launched at Universiti Malaysia Perlis on Wednesday.

“The main objective of the campaign is to increase public awareness of the importance of voting and to obtain the target of 85% voter turnout in GE14,” she said.

As of the fourth quarter of 2017, there are 14,968,304 voters registered with the EC. – Bernama, March 19, 2018.
