Residents prevent Kit Siang from holding ceramah

OVER 50 residents prevented DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang from holding a ceramah in Kampung Bakar Batu in Johor Bahru, China Press reported today.

The programme was scheduled to be held at 9pm last night and was to be hosted by Johor Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu secretary Osman Sapian.

According to the newspaper, the owner of the premises had called off the opposition ceramah, citing “pressure” from residents. 

After its cancellation, Lim held a press conference with other PH leaders during which the power supply was cut off from the building, the newspaper reported.

There was a commotion outside the building, the newspaper added.

The newspaper reported that an ustaz and several residents moved to halt the press conference. More residents approached the building, with one shouting “I am a resident here, don’t criticise Umno”.

Some residents called for calm and to give organisers 10 minutes to disperse. 

Lim told China Press that he hoped that Johor Baru MP Shahrir Samad will give an explanation over the incident.

DAP Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng told the newspaper that he regretted the incident and alleged that Umno had abused its power in prevent residents from meeting PH leaders.

Osman said Malaysia is a democracy, and that he and PH leaders were not foreigners to receive such treatment from the locals.

The newspaper reported no police presence. The newspaper reported that the crowd dispersed at 9.45pm.

  • Will the police act on these savages? You have pictures of thugs intimidating a peaceful ceramah.

    Is UMNO beyond reproach? Why can't the opposition criticise if it has a basis to do so? These aggressive arrogance should not be condoned in modern state. Shows how insecure and guilty these 'neanderthal'-like groups are that they cannot engage ethically in a civil manner!
