Malaysia logs 5,439 new Covid-19 cases, the highest this year

MALAYSIA reported 5,439 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily tally since the beginning of the year.

This is an increase from 4,744 new infections reported yesterday.

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, who tweeted the daily figures, said this puts Malaysia’s cumulative cases at 2,850,408 since the onset of the epidemic.

The breakdown of cases will be updated on the ministry’s CovidNow website after midnight.

Meanwhile, Covid-19 hospital admissions went up to 1,075 yesterday after staying below the four-digit range for 21 days.

The coronavirus also claimed 12 lives yesterday, taking the death toll to 31,930.

As of yesterday, of 203,943 adults in Malaysia have received their Covid-19 booster dose, bringing the total number of booster doses administered in the country to 11,327,531, or 48.4%, of the adult population.

According to the CovidNow website, 22,920,175, or 97.9%, of the adult population are fully vaccinated, while 23,197,884, or 99.1%, of the group have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Among the 12-17 age group, 2,784,682, or 88.5%, have completed vaccination course, while 2,865,987 individuals or 91.1% received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Data showed 208,042 doses of vaccine were administered yesterday, 677 of which were a first dose and 2,422 a second dose. The national vaccination campaign has so far dispensed 62,892,195 shots. – January 27, 2022.
