PRIME minister Najib Razak said those who are ashamed of being Malaysian should leave the country, slamming those who are not proud of their identity as being unpatriotic.
On Friday, Malay-language daily Sinar Harian reported that Mukhriz had claimed he was ashamed to admit to be Malaysian when travelling abroad, and would instead claim to be from fellow Southeast Asian Muslim country, Brunei.
However, Mukhriz slammed the article as misleading, saying that he was voicing the feelings of Malaysians in general when faced with taunts from foreigners on the state of the country’s decline.
“Whenever we go overseas, or to fulfil the umrah, and we’re asked which country we’re from, we are ashamed and are forced to say we’re from Brunei because Malaysia has so many problems,” he was quoted as saying.
“When we answer Malaysia, people will ask why our country is so full of problems, when before we were great and proud, but today we have become so despicable,” he said.
At today’s session with some 10,000 civil servants in Kelantan, Najib also launched veiled attacks on other members of Mukhriz’s family, implying that they were all enriched by their father, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“He doesn’t have to stay here as his family is already rich; his brother has 23 luxury cars and is listed as one of the richest in Malaysia, what else does he want?” said Najib.
“He gets Petronas contracts by the billions.
“What else is there to be angry about in Malaysia?”
Dr Mahathir’s second eldest son Mokhzani is listed by Forbes as Malaysia’s 34th richest person with a wealth of US$240 million (RM930 million). He also has a stake in oil-equipment fabricator Kencana Petroleum. – January 28, 2018.
