If you're not proud to be Malaysian, leave, says PM

PRIME minister Najib Razak said those who are ashamed of being Malaysian should leave the country, slamming those who are not proud of their identity as being unpatriotic.

“Let’s not be ashamed to be Malaysians. If we’re not proud, then as the people of Kedah say, “pi la, pi jauh-jauh la”(go, go far far away),” Najib said today in a veiled dig at Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir.

On Friday, Malay-language daily Sinar Harian reported that Mukhriz had claimed he was ashamed to admit to be Malaysian when travelling abroad, and would instead claim to be from fellow Southeast Asian Muslim country, Brunei.

However, Mukhriz slammed the article as misleading, saying that he was voicing the feelings of Malaysians in general when faced with taunts from foreigners on the state of the country’s decline.

“Whenever we go overseas, or to fulfil the umrah, and we’re asked which country we’re from, we are ashamed and are forced to say we’re from Brunei because Malaysia has so many problems,” he was quoted as saying.

“When we answer Malaysia, people will ask why our country is so full of problems, when before we were great and proud, but today we have become so despicable,” he said.

At today’s session with some 10,000 civil servants in Kelantan, Najib also launched veiled attacks on other members of Mukhriz’s family, implying that they were all enriched by their father, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“He doesn’t have to stay here as his family is already rich; his brother has 23 luxury cars and is listed as one of the richest in Malaysia, what else does he want?” said Najib.

“He gets Petronas contracts by the billions.

“What else is there to be angry about in Malaysia?”

Dr Mahathir’s second eldest son Mokhzani is listed by Forbes as Malaysia’s 34th richest person with a wealth of US$240 million (RM930 million). He also has a stake in oil-equipment fabricator Kencana Petroleum. – January 28, 2018.

  • We will only be proud to be Malaysians when corruption and malfeasance on the part of our leaders has been wiped out in Malaysia and when our Prime Minister is no longer known as the world's biggest kleptocrat.

  • Actually leaving Malaysia is a solution; but it is easier that you Najib leave or get defeated rather than the remaining 30 millions Malaysians leaving.

    • Why ask Malaysians to leave when they have done nothing wrong? The one who should be leaving is the Bugis, AKA the biggest kleptocrat in the world.

  • It is illogical to ask 32million poupalion in Malaysia to leave just to satisfy this particular kleptocrat and his family where it should be otherwise will suffice for all.

  • Ah Jib Kor, I am a very unhappy MALAYSIAN aged 70 years old. Listen, I am not going to leave as I am a MALAYSIAN citizen and I love this country where I was born, grows up here, build my family now retired and probably will die here and be buried here with my late father and mother. Why should I leave when I am not happy with the ruling party of this govt. All that I needed to do is to vote you and bn out.

Anyway, I didn’t voted for you in the first place or else I will feel even much more frustrated ok. My family and I will hold a big celebration the day UMNO/BN is voted out of PUTRAJAYA.

  • Easier for those with skills, talent and money, but what about those who don't? The only option left is to stay and fight while being prepared for arrests and humiliation at the hand of the State. But do the Rakyat have the will?

  • I'm getting sick of this gomen! Since you'd withdrew subsidies on so many essential commodities, my whole family cannot afford the high cost of living. On top of that you'd also introduced the GST and has cost hardship to all the low and middle income families. Our country used to be very rich; BUT now our country is in debt to the tune of RM687 billion and increasing every minute; where all our money gone?

  • You cannot talk like that as a PM. Should hve more finesse. If he is not proud there must be a reason. Malaysians should remember that the country and the government of the day are separate and yiu shoube proud of the country but you can be ashamed of the government of the day.

  • Actually I am darn proud to be a Malaysian. My friends of all races and religions or sexual orientation get along fine. We go through the challenges of life together that binds our friendship, we laugh in better times, we cry together when other friend pass away, we chip in when our friends face tough times etc, because we are all humans kan? We have basic moral compass that no religion can thwart or distort. And we have more things in common like our love for Malaysian food and culture, than our religious or racial differences. Just that we're not proud of our government. And we proudly tell that to our foreign friends who not only understands but agrees. Because sometimes, their governments suck too. But they are less disappointed because they get to change their government once in a while. So, why should I leave? I'm going to try to kick you out. Even if my vote is only 1/10th the value of a premium rural Malay vote, I will still try. It's not so easy to get rid of me.

  • Malaysia ? Oh yes I remember , that was a place that later became a Saudi proxy state , does it still exist ? Who was that fella who sold our beautiful country to the Saudi's ? Some Razak fella if I am not mistaken . Malaysia was such a beautiful country , full of diversity and tolerance , the melting pot of Asia , ahhhh yes , I remember that place , I miss her . Perhaps she can be resurrected , perhaps Malaysians will reach out to one another , remember that we have a shared destiny and say no to our beautiful country becoming a hotbed of intolerance .
