MAHFUZ Omar has 127 police reports lodged against him for allegedly insulting the Pahang ruler, but the independent Pokok Sena MP is keeping calm and is convinced that he has done nothing wrong.

The reports were lodged after he included a reference to Sultan Ahmad Shah when speaking about Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s age.

The former PAS lawmaker said he was merely speaking up in defence of the elderly, whom he blamed Prime Minister Najib Razak for insulting.

The 93-year-old Dr Mahathir is leading the opposition in the next general election, with the aim of bringing down Najib’s administration.

“I’m not angry at those who have lodged police reports against me, as I was defending elderly leaders who have been humiliated by Najib,” said Mahfuz.

Dr Mahathir’s nomination earlier this month as PH’s prime minister candidate has been attacked by the ruling Barisan Nasional.

Najib and other BN leaders have criticised the former prime minister’s age and suitability to lead Malaysia again.

Mahfuz, in a speech in Taiping, had said age was not an issue if a leader was good, and mentioned the Pahang ruler as an example.

Around the same time, a video of the elderly sultan celebrating his birthday in his bedchamber was leaked and went viral, raising the ire of his son, Regent of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Tengku Abdullah said he was also upset at Mahfuz’s mention of his father, and Mahfuz has apologised to the regent.

Pahang Umno Youth was among those who had lodged reports against the MP.

Mahfuz said his lawyers told him that he had not violated the Sedition Act.

“They said there is no element of sedition towards the sultan,” he said, adding that he had explained to police his intention in his speech.

“I stand by my statement that an elderly person can lead and continue to lead as king or prime minister, and age is not a barrier to being a good leader.”

He was questioned for more than two hours at the Alor Star police headquarters on January 18, accompanied by his lawyer, Mohamad Fikri.

Police said investigations were being carried out under the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – January 23, 2018.
