UNIVERSITY graduates who sell nasi lemak and become Uber drivers should be praised as they are independent and not ashamed of such work despite their high academic qualifications.

Kubang Pasu Member of Parliament, Mohd Johari Baharum said nobody should look down on them but should show them support.

We should encourage the younger generation who are holding two jobs to earn more income,” he said after handing offer letters to 56 students from Kubang Pasu parliamentary constituency to enrol into the Mara Junior Science College at an event held at SMK Pulau Nyior, Jitra, today.

They are not picky and ashamed as they can get good income, which is better than being unemployed.”

On Wednesday, Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was quoted as saying it was shameful many graduates had to work as Uber drivers or sell nasi lemak.

The former prime minister also said the number of graduates who were not employed in the fields they had been trained was proof of the government’s failure to provide jobs to the people.

  • We are moving towards a high income nation…by holding 2 jobs, or may be 3 jobs… where does it end?

  • We are not ashamed of university graduates who end up working as Uber drivers or sell nasi lemak. We indeed applaud them for their initiatives instead of depending on government handpoys or family support. What we are ashamed about is incompetent, corrupt and bigoted ministers like Johar Baharum who screwed up the country and is and the primary cause for graduates ending work that they are over-qualified to do thus wasting their talents.

  • Fact of the matter is, for a middle income country, and we will still be middle income even if we hit USD15,000 per capita because high income now is actually 4X. There should not be any need for graduates to hold two income jobs.. It shows there is structural issue with the economy. Malaysia has not been able to capture a core competency in a globalized economy. We are actually trading our markets for investments NOT create engines of future growth. Its unsustainable, will reverse very quickly once the population ages. If the population does not age, then we have social problems.

  • Typical of a low-IQ Umno politician. We are on the topic of the mismanagement of the Govt that created a problem of unemployment and under-employment of graduates.
Nobody is looking-down on anybody. Rakyat are only looking-down on you useless Umno politicians that are unable to serve the country.
