FORMER prime minister Najib Razak has slammed the Registrar of Societies (RoS) for invalidating Umno’s decision to postpone its party elections, saying it had in effect nullified the party’s Supreme Council.
The Pekan MP said the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is using the agency to retaliate against Umno’s move to have its MPs withdraw support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
“PN does not like the Umno supreme council’s decision to pull support from Muhyiddin.
“So today it invalidated the legitimacy of the Umno supreme council by saying its term had ended on June 30,” Najib, who is Barisan Nasional’s adviser, said in a Facebook post.
He was reacting to the statement by RoS earlier that Umno’s decision on July 8 to postpone party elections for 18 months was invalid, because the party’s Supreme Council’s term had ended on June 30.
Umno was supposed to have held elections for its 2018-2021 term office bearers on July 7, after an earlier postponement from last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Umno’s party elections takes place every three years.
The party’s last poll was held on June 30, 2018, and the tenure of its office bearers was to have expired on the same date this year. – August 6, 2021.
