UMNO’S decision to postpone its party elections has been declared invalid by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

RoS director-general Jasri Kasim said the finding was based on the Umno Supreme Council’s decision at a meeting to postpone the supreme council, division, and branch elections, which was scheduled to take place on July 7.

“The decision (by Umno) is invalid because the term of the supreme council officer bearers for 2018/2021 had ended on June 30,” he was quoted as saying by The Star Online today.

Jasri said that the RoS is responsible for ensuring that all activities and management of registered societies are in accordance with each organisation’s constitution and does not contradict the Societies Act 1966 or any of the country’s laws.

Last July 8, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the party’s supreme council had endorsed the decision to cancel the party elections for 18 months.

The Umno election was supposed to be held last year, but was postponed due to the movement control order in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Umno party elections takes place every three years. The previous one was held on June 30, 2018.

The term of Umno’s current office bearers had expired on June 30, 2021. – August 6, 2021.

  • Does this mean the party will be deregistered? No need to call for parliament session. Better call the party election first to solve this problem plus the problem of who is the leader of UMNO? It is beginning to look like a headless chicken.
