Makes no sense to adjourn Parliament sitting due to Covid infections, says Najib

Former prime minister Najib Razak has questioned why a number of Members of Parliament were allowed to leave and gather at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s home if the Covid-19 infection at the Parliament is of grave concern. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, August 1, 2021.

NO sane person would believe that the government has adjourned the Parliament sitting scheduled for tomorrow due to Covid-19 infections, Najib Razak said.

The former prime minister pointed out that a Covid-19 infection among staff at a vaccination centre recently only saw the centre being closed for a day for sanitisation works.

“On July 12, 204 staff were confirmed positive at the PPV Ideal Convention Centre, Shah Alam, and the centre was closed the next day, and reopened on July 14.

“And in Parliament, 11 individuals were tested positive from 1,183 tests done on Thursday.

“It is very difficult to believe that the PPV, which involves thousands of people, was allowed to operate just two days after 204 staff were tested positive but Parliament has been closed for an unspecified period,” he said in his Facebook posting today.

The Pekan MP said following the example in Shah Alam, Parliament is safe to open and there is no reason for Putrajaya to postpone the special sitting to another date.

“Is the government thinking that the lives of 220 MPs are more valuable than the public who went to get their vaccines every day?

“And if the situation in Parliament is too dangerous, why were MPs allowed to leave and gather at the prime minister’s home on Thursday afternoon without getting screened?” he asked.

Najib also took a jab at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s majority, asking if the Pagoh MP has enough support. He said the Bersatu president should allow Emergency Ordinances to be debated and voting to take place.

“Allow MPs to vote and debate if the PM has the strong support 110 or 115 MPs. He should not run away but must explain the situation.

“He only came on Monday and then didn’t show up since,” said Najib.

Parliament sitting on Thursday – the fourth day of five days of special meeting – was repeatedly adjourned since lunch break, until the final announcement at 5.15pm by deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon.

The morning session was interrupted when opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim read out the Agong’s statement rebutting de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan’s revocation of Emergency Ordinances.

This caused a ruckus in the House, prompting the deputy speaker to adjourn for lunch.

At 2.30pm, another deputy speaker, Azalina Othman Said, further adjourned the sitting to 3.30pm without giving any reasons.

At 3.30pm, Rashid entered the Dewan and asked all MPs to undergo Covid-19 screening, saying that the Health Ministry had detected two positive cases. He also said the sitting would be adjourned to 5.15pm.

At 5.15pm, Rashid told the Dewan Rakyat that the sitting had to be postponed to Monday citing concerns of Covid-19 infections in the Parliament building.

On Saturday, Muhyiddin ordered Parliament to be adjourned to a later date because of the Covid-19 infections.

The notice was sent by Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin to MPs yesterday.

In the notice, Nizam said Muhyiddin had ordered the Monday meeting to be adjourned in accordance with Standing Orders 11(3). – August 1, 2021.
