OPPOSITION leader Anwar Ibrahim has urged the authorities to investigate outgoing Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador’s allegation of political interference in the police force.

“The police should be free from political interference. Any attempt to do so shows the current government will do anything to hold on to power,” he said in a statement today.

“I urge a thorough investigation and the government must answer to Hamid’s allegation as soon as possible,” said Anwar.

In his last press conference as the nation’s top cop, Hamid warned that the country was on a slippery slope, if politicians meddled or interfered with police matters.

Hamid trained his guns on Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin, who Hamid said had overstepped his boundary in interfering with police matters.

Hamid was referring to the recent promotion and transfer of senior police officers, which he accused the home minister of stopping.

He was commenting on Hamzah’s remarks where the minister admitted it was his voice in an audio conversation with an unidentified man over the appointment of the next inspector-general of police.

The IGP said he had nothing to do with that audio recording.

Hamid, who will retire tomorrow, said he had twice raised Hamzah’s interference in the affairs of the police to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and also voiced it to the Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali. – May 2, 2021.
