FIVE opposition lawmakers today urged Anwar Ibrahim to not collaborate with kleptocrats but to work instead on strengthening his side.

The PKR president who also leads Pakatan Harapan chief confirmed yesterday that he has been in preliminary talks with Umno to become partners but denied an alliance has been struck.

In a statement today, the five lawmakers urged the opposition to focus its strengths to champion the people’s agenda for the good of all.

“Malaysia has gone through one year of failed leadership under the Perikatan Nasional government.

“The opposition must work together towards a common agenda and strengthen ties and cooperation between parties and MPs, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic which has led to an economic slowdown and failure in the administration,” they said.

The five MPs were Amanah vice-president Salahuddin Ayub, Warisan youth chief Azis Jamman, Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong, Muda leader Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman and Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s Baru Bian.

They said the Perikatan Nasional leadership has failed in its stewardship of the economy and public health and that it does not have a clear plan to lead the country.

“The opposition must utilise these failures of the PN government and put forward a common agenda for the benefit of the people.

“PN’s failure to demonstrate its capabilities and commitment is an opportunity for the opposition bloc to demonstrate its leadership capabilities by formulating policies and initiatives that will help the people.”

Umno, which is a member of the ruling coalition, has said that it will face the next general election on its own.

Party leaders have also indicated their willingness to work with Anwar and PKR. – March 17, 2021.
