THE Kuala Lumpur High Court today shot down Najib Razak’s application to vacate his 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case tomorrow so that the Pekan MP could visit flood victims.
Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah said he had accommodated Najib’s request where it was possible throughout the trial but would not allow the latest application.
“Your application is denied… the trial will proceed as usual,” he told the court after Najib’s lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah made the application.
Applying for the case to be vacated tomorrow, Shafee said that the former prime minister wanted to visit flood victims in the east coast states.
“The east coast states are being hit hard by floods. The water level is rising to dangerous levels. My client did not go last week because the situation was not that bad then, but it has become really bad now.
“If he does not go, it will be a bad reflection on him,” he told the court.
After a delay of four months, Najib’s corruption trial resumed this morning.
Najib, 67, is accused of four counts of abusing his position to obtain bribes amounting to RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money-laundering involving the same amount.
The trial before Sequerah will continue with the 10th prosecution witness, former 1MDB chief executive officer Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman, who will be cross-examined by counsel Shafee, who is leading the defence team.
Hazem, 47, began testifying on September 14.
The court set January 4-7, 25-27; February 2-4, 8-11, 15-18; April 5-8, 19-22, 26-28; May 3-6, 17-20, 24-27; June 1-3, 8-10, 21-24, 28-30; and July 5-8 to hear the case. – January 5, 2021.
