TOP Glove Corp said it is working to improve the living quarters of its employees, following the visit of the Labour Department to workers’ hostel of its Ipoh factory.

The world’s largest glove producer said action is being taken to meet the requirements of the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).

“With regard to the visit by the Department of Labour to our Ipoh factory workers’ accommodation yesterday, we wish to inform that Top Glove will be extending its fullest cooperation to the relevant authorities,” it said in a statement today.

“Part of our efforts towards this for our workers in Ipoh is the rental of eight units of new shop lot hostels. Six have been occupied while another two are in the process of being set up for the workers.”

Top Glove said the exercise to improve the living conditions of its staff began in July and is expected to be fully completed by early December.

“Efforts to source for more accommodation and to improve existing worker accommodations are ongoing,” it said.

The Labour Department said after checks at the hostel at the Tasek area yesterday that the accommodation was filthy and overcrowded.

The raid was conducted following the discovery of a Covid-19 cluster linked to the company’s premises in Selangor. – November 27, 2020.

  • So it takes a ban by the US for the Malaysian government to finally take action. Despite all Top Gloves denials of poor treatment of its workers, the living conditions are now seen to be below standard. It makes you wonder what else inspections might reveal.

  • The owners must be taken to task to allow their factories to be Covit 19 breeding Grounds. How come the Factories in Klang did not follow the Set SOP issued by the Government and allowed it to spread. I say the Govt should just close down the Factories completely.
