PKR said it would continue with its efforts to form a new government with the support of like-minded lawmakers in line with the people’s mandate, given in the last general election.

Party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail also said the party respected Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s stand today that Umno would support the Perikatan Nasional government in its efforts to help the people and country deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and economic woes.

“PKR takes note and respects the statement issued by the Umno president today.

“At the same time, we will continue with our efforts to return the people’s mandate, with the support of lawmakers who share our aspirations and ambitions,” he said in a statement today.

Earlier today, Zahid called for a ceasefire from all politicians as the country battles the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said Umno decided on a truce as the economy was hit and the people were badly affected.

“The party is calling for a political ceasefire. Helping the people who are affected by hardships and anxiety due to economic obstacles should be given priority,” he said in a statement today.

The Bagan Datoh MP added Umno will support the PN government during these trying times.

He also ordered all Umno ministers to stop politicking and focus their full efforts in helping the people at this point.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim had previously said he had the support of a majority of MPs to form a new government. He also added this meant the Muhyiddin Yassin-led two-seat-majority government had fallen.

It was reported that Zahid and Umno had given their backing to Anwar, resulting in Muhyiddin losing his support.

Umno had been disappointed with Muhyiddin’s Bersatu over the newer party’s bullying attitude.

However Zahid’s statement today put an end to the political uncertainty, and continued to give Muhyiddin a razor-thin majority in Dewan Rakyat. – October 21, 2020.
