Don’t speak on DAP’s behalf, Guan Eng tells outsiders

NO one outside of the party can speak on DAP’s behalf, secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said of initial claims by Amanah’s Khalid Samad that DAP is willing to work with Umno in a new government under Anwar Ibrahim.

Lim said only statements by the secretary-general represent the party, unless stated as a personal opinion.

Others who can speak for the party are the national chairman and deputy chairman, he said.

“Following the clarification by Amanah Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad that he never spoken on DAP’s behalf on DAP’s alleged cooperation with Umno, I wish to stress that no outside party has the right to do so.

“This matter has been dealt with and the party’s position clearly enunciated,” Lim said in a statement today.

Khalid was reported as saying by Utusan Malaysia recently that DAP did not have problems working with Umno under a government led by Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar, who claims to have the majority support of MPs to be the next prime minister.

Khalid also claims 30 MPs from Umno are willing to support Anwar, but later said the figure is an estimate.

DAP has repeated previously that it will never work with Umno.

Lim said at the moment, as the country battles the Covid-19 pandemic and weak economy, it is best that there be no cabinet reshuffle, amid speculation that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would do so to placate Umno in order to avoid the toppling of his government.

Lim also urged Muhyiddin to “stop focusing on political survival by enticing over MPs with GLC positions” and put time and effort instead to correcting failures over the Covid-19 crisis. – October 20, 2020.

  • Good. One of the problems in Malaysian politics is that people often speak for others. To make matters worse, the media often report these rumours verbatim instead of checking with the source whether what is said of them is true.
