MORE than a million households and businesses in the Klang Valley woke up to dry taps this morning – the second incident in less than two weeks – after pollution was detected in Sg Selangor.

Air Selangor corporate communications head Elina Baseri said operations at the treatment plant Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang were stopped to clear the pollution.

The suspension of the four plants caused unscheduled disruption involving 1.196 million accounts covering 1,292 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang , Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.

“Air Selangor will provide tankers to the affected areas with priority to critical premises, such as hospitals and dialysis centres,” she said in a statement.

Consumers who need emergency assistance, such as for funeral arrangements, can call 15300.

Elina said the process of dilution and “flushing” of contaminants found in Sg Selangor started immediately.

This, she said, was done by releasing raw water from the dam at up tp 800 million litres per day.

“The Selangor Water Management Board has released raw water through the KL Larut pond pumping operation with a capacity of 336 million litres per day for the same purpose.

“Until 6.30am, pollution in Sg Selangor is at the level of one tonne.”

Yesterday, consumers in 688 areas in the Klang Valley started receiving supply from 2pm after being hit by an unscheduled disruption.

On Saturday, a pipe burst leading to the disruption.

  • Is the MB of Selangor taking this water disruption matter based on the advised of his team or is he really on top of things. Enough is enough, if the enforcement and surveillance team is being task orderly with enough resources and equipment I am dam sure such things wont be a constant nightmare for the people of Selangor. For the MB house one phone call will do for a tanker to fill up his swimming pool but do have some empathy for us the ordinary people. If its in your head we have done our level best then I am afraid you sucks big time as a MB. The bugs should stop at your desk no two way about it, if theres a will theres a way.

  • The MB is not responsible for polluting the river. Unscrupulous businesses but also the general public are responsible. Every worker should check what their company is doing. A hotline for anonymous reports should be widely published. Then the inspections must be carried out quickly and without warning. The water company must work with the Selangor environmental dept head to crack down on the pollution. The MBs role is to ensure that happens.
