2 virus deaths, 89 new infections

MALAYSIA reported two Covid-19 deaths today – one in Kedah and the other in Sabah.

The two fatalities raise the national death toll to 136, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

There were also 89 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, of which 86 involved local transmissions.

Sabah accounted for the bulk of the new locally transmitted infections with 35 cases. 

Kedah, which reported a new cluster, saw 13 infections.

Other states that reported fresh cases include Selangor and Johor, each reporting 10 and eight cases, respectively.

Infections were also reported in Sarawak, with four, Kuala Lumpur (3), Terengganu (3), Pahang (2), Kelantan (2), Perlis (2), Negri Sembilan (1), Perak (1), Penang (1) and Labuan (1).

Citizens accounted for 84 of the locally transmitted infections while the remaining two were foreigners.

The new daily cases brings the national caseload to 11,224.

Active cases rose to 1,121 from 1,062 yesterday.

In the past 24 hours, 28 people have also been discharged from hospital after recovering from the coronavirus.

With this, the total number of recoveries stands at 9,967.

Sixteen patients are currently warded in the intensive care unit, with three requiring respiratory support.

The two deaths, meanwhile, were of two Malaysian men, one aged 46 in Kedah and another aged 70 in Tawau, Sabah.

The Kedah man had underlying chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart and kidney problems. He experienced symptoms on September 21 and died on September 28, after being taken to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital’s emergency department for breathing difficulties.

The Sabah man was a late-stage cancer patient and died at home on September 26. A posthumous Covid-19 test conducted by the Tawau Hospital forensics unit came back positive. – September 30, 2020.
