Selangor palace confirms return of Dr Mahathir, wife’s royal awards

THE Selangor sultan has accepted the return of Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali’s royal awards, a statement from the palace said.

“Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah have returned and surrendered the royal awards on December 7,” said the three-paragraph statement signed by Selangor Royal Council secretary Hanafisah Jais today.

“The cancelation of the royal awards (to them) will be gazetted according to the prescribed procedures,” said the statement.

It was reported by The Malaysian Insight yesterday that Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir, Malaysia’s prime minister for 22 years, and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah, returned two titles each last Thursday.

Dr Mahathir returned the Darjah Kebesaran Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor (SPMS) Darjah Kelas Pertama and Darjah Yang Amat Dihormati Kelas Pertama (DK) royal awards.

Dr Siti Hasmah returned the SPMS and Dato Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) royal awards.

It has been reported that the Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, was outraged at Dr Mahathir’s insult of the Bugis community.

During the “Love Malaysia, end kleptocracy” rally in Petaling Jaya on October 14, Dr Mahathir slammed Prime Minister Najib Razak as a descendent of a “Bugis pirate”.

The Selangor royal court on November 2 released a statement saying that the sultan was enraged and disappointed with Dr Mahathir’s speech, urging the police to investigate the former prime minister for allegedly inciting hatred towards the Bugis.

The sultan in an interview with The Sunday Star also described Dr Mahathir as a leader with an “inferiority complex” and one whose “anger would burn the country”. – December 12, 2017.

  • What is going on with this sultan of Selangor. Inciting hatred. Despicable.

    The S of Selangor should focus more on voicing out against MO1, 1MDB ... Dr M is voicing out against the pirate' for the good of Malaysia and all this Selangor S cared for is your bugis here and there.

    Have you heard and read about International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD)? If not, please do. We are trying hard to promote peace and you are trying to disintegrate the raykat and promote racial discrimination. So much for being a Selangor S.

    The rakyat should have a Petition against this Selangor S to observe and respect ICERD.

    If not, people will also ask you to balik bugisland.

  • Duties of leaders in community includes promotion of inclusiveness and fairness to dispel racism, sectarianism and division. While it takes to hands to clap, it seems silly to slap oneself and look the other way when there are much more obvious criminal acts being committed against the nation.
