FOLLOWING her husband Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali has also returned two royal awards to the Selangor Palace, said a spokesperson from the former prime minister’s office.

The source told The Malaysian Insight that the two awards were returned last Thursday.

Dr Mahathir had also returned the awards last Thursday.

“The two awards that were returned were SPMS and DPMS,” said the spokesperson.

Dr Siti Hasmah was awarded the DPMS by the Selangor palace in 1983 and the SPMS in 1994.

The SPMS, or Darjah Kebesaran Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor Darjah Kelas Pertama, carries the title of “Datuk Seri” and is awarded to only two persons at any one time, with a maximum of 40 living recipients.

The DPMS, or Dato Paduka Mahkota Selangor, carries the title of “Datuk Paduka” or “Datin Paduka” for women.

The Selangor Palace told The Malaysian Insight that it would issue a statement on the matter tomorrow.

The Malaysian Insight reported today that Dr Mahathir returned the awards through letters that were handed over to a senior officer at the office of the sultan of Selangor at Istana Bukit Kayangan in Shah Alam.

Bersatu information chief Kamaruddin Mohd Nor confirmed to The Malaysian Insight today that Dr Mahathir had returned the awards last week.

The former prime minister, who is now head of the opposition Pakatan Harapan bloc, was the recipient of two awards from the sultan of Selangor in 1978 and 2003.

He received the SPMS Darjah Kelas Pertama on June 22, 1978.

A month before his retirement in October 2003, Dr Mahathir was awarded the Darjah Yang Amat Dihormati Kelas Pertama (DK) at a special recognition ceremony called “Jasamu Dikenang” at Istana Alam Shah in Klang. – December 11, 2017.

  • Both of you truly show the quality expected from nation leaders. The rakayat knows very well where they place their respect and fully support the actions. It is pointless to be beholden to awards.

    • At least they are doing it right for the young generations to emulate. Be a man of principle and honor as when the awards no longer has the glitter or enhance the owner respect it is no longer something to zealously beholden to it. Like wise when an awardee has done something wrong and do not warrant to be commended for such high honorifics it should be return by one own willingness or per request from the awarder. This old couple is doing what the old Malay culture practises. You should be proud of their actions.
