SEVEN reports have been lodged against Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh over his remarks on Christianity and the consumption of alcohol, said Sarawak police commissioner Aidi Ismail.

He told The Malaysian Insight that five reports were lodged in Sarawak, and one each in Kuala Lumpur and Sabah.

“We are investigating the matter. After that, it will be handed over to Bukit Aman.”

He said the first report was made in Kuching.

Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department chief Nik Nor Azhan said a report was lodged two days ago.

He said the complainant filed the report at the Taman Tun Dr Ismail station, after which they were told to give their statement at the Travers station.

Zawawi caused outrage when he said in Parliament that Christians are allowed to drink alcohol following a distortion of the Bible.

Christian groups in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as the Christian Federation of Malaysia, have demanded that the PAS man retract his statement and issue an apology.

Amid the controversy and a sedition probe, he has stood by his remarks.

Two members of the Sabah-based Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku are suing Zawawi over his comments. Tg Aru division chief Marcel Jude Joseph and party colleague Margaret Binsing said the lawmaker’s claim is blasphemous and disrespectful.

Their lawyer has filed an injunction to prevent Zawawi from making further discriminatory statements on their religion. – September 6, 2020.
