TWO Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku members are suing Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh over his comments on Christianity forbidding the consumption of alcohol.
Tg Aru division chief Marcel Jude Joseph and fellow party member Margaret Binsing said the PAS lawmaker’s remarks are blasphemous and disrespectful to other religions.
A lawyer for the Sabahan duo has filed an injunction to prevent Zawawi from making further discriminatory statements on their religion.
Their statement of claim said Zawawi has unlawfully harmed, endangered, hurt, offended and scandalised them of their faith and beliefs.
“The defendant is in contravention, or unlawful interference, of our right to freedom of religion under Article 11 of the federal constitution.”
Yesterday, Zawawi defended his remarks, saying the Old Testament states that alcohol is forbidden.
He “beseeched” all those who distorted his explanation in the Dewan Rakyat last month to support Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong’s campaign against drink-driving.
“To those who insist on an apology, let us meet and have a cup of tea, discuss amiably, and come to understand each other better.”
Apart from the injunction, Joseph and Binsing are also seeking damages for unlawful interference in their constitutional right to religion. – September 4, 2020.
