WHILE thankful that the inspector-general of police (IGP) has agreed to meet her, M. Indira Gandhi, however is uncomfortable that she would have to meet him alone, without the presence of her lawyers.

The former kindergarten teacher told The Malaysian Insight she was surprised with this condition imposed by IGP Abdul Hamid Bador as she needs her lawyers from the Indira Gandhi Action Team (Ingat) to explain any legal terms.

“I need someone to advise me. They (the lawyers) have more details on what had transpired,” she said.

Indira is looking to be reunited with her youngest child, Prasana Diksa, who was snatched by her estranged husband, Muhammad Riduan Abdullah, in 2009.

Earlier today, Hamid said he was ready to meet Indira but it must be without the presence of a third party.

“My door is always open to her but I don’t want any third party involved in any meeting,” the IGP had said.

Hamid had previously promised Indira a “happy ending” to her saga, which has now stretched to 12 years.

“We hope the IGP will allow the lawyers. This is a high-profile case and the public also needs to know the update of the investigations.”

As for the hunger strike at Bukit Aman on September 11, Indira said she will wait for an official letter for the meeting from Bukit Aman.

“Let the IGP meet me before August 31, then we will see (what happens).

“He has not given a date, so it could be the end of the year, I don’t know. Let’s get an official response before calling off the hunger strike,” Indira said.

Last week, Ingat sent a letter to Hamid asking that he meet Indira, and if he fails to do so, they will organise a hunger strike in front of the federal police headquarters.

Meanwhile, Ingat chairman Arun Dorasamy said their team was formed to represent Indira in every matter including legal affairs.

“We have requested in our letter to the IGP, which is to give us updates on the investigations. That’s the main issue.

“There is no need to see Indira alone. She deserves to be represented by Ingat and her lawyers.”

He said it is crucial that lawyers are present, as they need to make sure that the high court order on the case needs to be explained thoroughly.

Riduan in 2014 was ordered by the Ipoh High Court to return Prasana but failed to do so, leading to a mandamus order by the court compelling the then IGP to arrest him.

Indira is also suing Hamid for RM100 million for failing to locate her daughter.

Riduan made off with Prasana after he unilaterally converted the couple’s three children to Islam. He is now in defiance of a court order to return the child to her mother.

The court granted Indira custody of her three children after finding their conversion to be unlawful. – August 13, 2020.
