MALAY voters, especially those in Johor, prefer Muafakat Nasional to Perikatan Nasional, said a state Umno leader.
Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed said moving forward, MN’s cooperation must be the basis for future political formation.
“Whether PN is registered, people in Johor, the public and Umno members, prefer MN.
“This is the message we carried to the MN meeting. That is why we want MN to be the foundation for any political agreement we will make in the 15th general election and beyond,” the Pulai MP told The Malaysian Insight.
Nur Jazlan, however, anticipates several issues among the grassroots, with Bersatu now wanting to join the Umno-PAS pact.
He said even though many top Bersatu leaders are from Johor, the party does not have a grasp of the state in terms of machinery.
“What is important now is, how will the people vote in the next general election? Also, where will Bersatu be? With MN or PN?
“If you look at Bersatu, although they claim to have influence in Johor, most of their divisions have no members.
“They will depend on MN’s machinery to win the elections.”
The former deputy home minister added that there is no guarantee Bersatu leaders would win by margins they won in the last general election as they were then dependent on Pakatan Harapan votes.
“In the last election, their votes came from PH. The majority of PH supporters will not vote for Bersatu this time around.
“Would MN voters vote for Bersatu candidates? If they pick the wrong candidate and are overly dependent on MN, we would surely lose the seat,” Nur Jazlan said.
There is respect between Umno and PAS despite the parties being enemies for decades, he said.
“We have a corporation in MN as there is a charter. We respect each other and even though we used to be enemies, we are now coming together for the sake of Muslims and Malays,” Nur Jazlan said.
MN is already geared up for elections and the groundwork has already been done except for seat negotiations, he said.
However, Nur Jazlan said MN will not be registered as an official political entity as Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS want to maintain its branding, which Malaysians have become familiar with over the years.
“There is no problem for us in MN not to be registered as an official pact. It is like BN. We will contest under our own logo,” he said.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on Thursday the party will not be joining PN when it registers as a pact but will still cooperate with the current government.
He also said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin expressed Bersatu’s intent to join MN but this will be up to the partners to decide. – August 1, 2020.
