JOHOR police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said it is common for officers, himself included, to receive threats, especially when tackling human trafficking.

Police will never bow to such intimidation, he said.

“Yes, there have been attempts to threaten me. It’s normal. What’s important is to always be cautious in our actions, and leave the rest to God.

“Don’t be afraid. If you’re afraid, don’t be a police officer.

“Teachers and journalists also receive threats sometimes. It’s common. So, don’t worry and don’t be afraid,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters today.

He was responding to a report that a skipper from a neighbouring country had given his name to a migrant smuggling syndicate in retaliation for authorities’ crackdown.

Ayob Khan added that the remand order for eight men, including a cop and three armed forces personnel, who were arrested on Friday for stealing cows, has been extended for another three days.

“We will submit the investigation paper (to the deputy public prosecutor) soon for them to be charged if there is concrete evidence in the case.”

The suspects, aged between 27 and 48, are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code and Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960. – Bernama, June 29, 2020.
