DAP, Amanah ‘No’ to deal with Hamzah

DAP and Amanah said they would not work with Hamzah Zainudin to return to federal power after it emerged that their ally PKR had met with the home minister.

Hamzah, who is part of the Perikatan Nasional government, was named as the chief conspirator of the Sheraton move, the coup that brought down Pakatan Harapan in late February.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim revealed that he met Hamzah recently to “discuss current issues and matters concerning Hamzah’s ministry”.

DAP and Amanah, which are PKR’s partners in PH, said in a statement yesterday “any formula that includes Hamzah but excludes Warisan and the Bersatu faction loyal to Dr Mahathir Mohamad is not acceptable and not based on principles”.

Amanah deputy president Salahudin Ayub and DAP vice-chairman M. Kula Segaran issued the joing statement.

PH is attempting to return to federal power by working with Warisan and Dr Mahathir’s faction in an alliance dubbed “Pakatan Plus”.

But their plans have stalled after they could not secure a majority in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat and agree on a prime minister’s candidate.

Dr Mahathir and Warisan have proposed the latter’s president Mohd Shafie Apdal as the PM candidate but PKR, the party with the second largest parliamentary seats, wants Anwar.

Tensions between Dr Mahathir and Anwar have been simmering over the past weeks over the issue.

Negotiations are continuing among the five parties but their constant bickering and scheming have alienated many of their core supporters.

DAP and Amanah said a return to power must include Warisan and Dr Mahathir’s faction, as they were voted in during the 14th general election.

Hamzah is part of a Bersatu faction loyal to current Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We are of the view that Muhyiddin, Azmin Ali, Najib Razak and Hamzah Zainudin are the hostile forces that brought about the Sheraton coup in order to free Umno leaders from corruption charges and to extend the shelf life of past kleptocratic rule, which was vehemently objected by Malaysians in the 14th general election,” they said.

“Therefore, there can be no arrangement to form government with this group of leaders.” – June 29, 2020.

  • The feelings of the voters have changed over the past 2 years. If elections are held today most of the PH MPs will loose their seats, including Tun. Instead of bickering over who is going to be the next PM, please dissolve the Parliament and let the Malaysians decide whom they want to lead them. Or let Tan Sri Muhideen to serve out the 3 years and face the electorate.
Or change the constitution to have an executive President and the PM and cabinet work under him.Only Malays should stand for President, up to 3 candidates to stand for election. One from each Malay party. 1 DS Annuar 2 Khairy Jamaludin from UMNO and 3 from PAS. Those who already served as PM are not eligible . Cabinet posts decided on the number of seats held by all parties. Proportionate division.
High time we change our electoral system.

  • Rakyat will support leaders and parties with good principles and ethic, not merely for power.

  • I think the role and responsibilities if PM must be decentralized appropriately to avoid too much power in the hands of PM. This is bad democratic practices.

  • I have said this before and I saying it again, all the previous seaters of that era supreme council has to go and that goes to KJ as well, root them out then the presents 3 old timers pave way for the young crops to take over. All efforts to unite the Malay are just talks as each party has their bloody own agenda right under your skin.
