DR Mahathir Mohamad has thrown his support behind Mohd Shafie Apdal as the prime minister candidate for Pakatan Harapan Plus in the event the coalition wins federal power in the next general election.

Speaking to Bersatu members at the Perdana Leadership Foundation yesterday, the former party chairman said he will campaign for Shafie and explain to the grassroots why he had picked him.

“Although I’m not nominated, this is someone who is with me and us as he opposes kleptocracy,” the 94-year-old told the gathering.

“That’s why we have to support Shafie. Supporting him is like supporting me

“Although, this is a minor change, I hope that the grassroots will support Shafie,” Dr Mahathir said.

DAP, Amanah and Warisan had initially nominated Dr Mahathir over PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister candidate but the latter has said it would not accept the former two-time prime minister to return for a third stint.

It is learnt that Dr Mahathir has offered Shafie, who is Sabah chief minister, to fill the role in order to break the impasse over the prime minister candidate.

The call for Shafie to be prime minister candidate gained traction last night when Warisan vice-president Junz Wong took to Facebook and said that Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners in the formation of Malaysia, are no less than the peninsula, adding they are not second class citizens.

“Even the aspiration to see a Sabahan or Sarawakian leading the nation as a prime minister in the future is not something that is impossible,” Wong said without naming names.

Pakatan Harapan lost federal power after Bersatu pulled out of the pact in February, just 22-months into its rule.

  • Why M doesn't support Anwar as PM? This proves that M has no intention to allow Anwar as PM. Eventually the wolf's tail appears to show his color. PKR read M right that M has no intention to install Anwar as PM. So PKR is right to insist Anwar as PM candidate and not M or anybody else. So M also contradicted himself earlier as saying that PM must come from a Malay party. Warisan is not a Malay party. M is losing his credibility if he continues to be inconsistent.

    • If A has the support then show it. No need M or S or any other leaders. S asked for 6 mths for M and when M said, truthfully, its not enough to right the wrongs PN has done, S insists still 6 mths. That has been agreed on. But A still insists he must he PM no matter what. How can A be PM when no one in the Borneo supports him. He went to Sarawak & what happened ? Cold shoulder and came back with tails between his legs. A has to be realistic. Even if M endorse him, Borneo still dont want him. Now M gives a middle ground option. Vote S as PM and let Borneo have it this time. A couldve been PM if only he is willing to compromise some. But he cant, can he ? Alone, whether M or A, they BOTH cannot win against PN or BN. This has been proven. GE14 win was a double factor, when both teams works together and convinced the people of their sincerity. You cant deny that fact. Amongst the Malays, M is still somebody. A needs M if he wants to be PM this life time, whether he wants to accept it or not.

    • If M is sincere, he should garner all the support A needs to lead the country out of corrupt politicians.. Why should M be allowed again, when hes shown failure to the pressure and lost to opponents ..

  • Time to have someone from East Malaysia to be the PM. The people there are the least racist and are most tolerance among all races.
    Fully support the idea!
